Jenna is having another ‘traumatic’ day as the family is getting ready for her younger sister’s birthday party. Using her witty charm and sarcastic attitude, Jenna appeals for permission to be with her friends instead. After refusing to help, Jenna goes to her room and calls her friend complaining about her awful day. When Olivia (her younger sister) comes to her room, Jenna sings FLY AWAY - longing to find a less stressful place and some explanations for her seemingly daily ordeals.Suddenly, Mom bursts into the room, argues with Jenna, and sends Olivia back to her party. Jenna has a wild outburst and emotional melt down. While in this dream-like trance, her room transforms into a circus-style atmosphere as we hear the song COME ALONG. Her posters, stuffed animals, dolls, and puppets appear to come alive and invite Jenna to take a ‘fantastical’ trip through her mind. In this fantasy world, she wakes to meet the mysterious and cunning MC, (played by her therapist dad). He leads Jenna on the adventurous journey and first brings her to the Emotions. Jenna watches her various emotions (Love, Jealousy, Guilt, Anxiety, etc.) come alive and comically debate her issues as they try to get along. They sing GET OVER YOURSELF, a song about the conflicts of her constantly changing emotions and recent "drama queen" disposition. As Jenna’s sassy persona slowly returns, the MC challenges her "wit" and then introduces her to the frenetic Id and Superego. In their song ID AND SUPEREGO, Id encourages Jenna to be impulsive, while Superego pleads for careful decisions and warns of possible consequences. After Jenna debates the MC about the whole “fantasy thing” being lame, he brings out Common Sense (her old dolls which were stashed in the toy trunk). The incredibly delightful dolls sing ALL IN YOUR MIND to make things clear for Jenna. They explain how she can learn from the whole experience using her own common sense.Jenna is beginning to relate to the various characters, but feels as if no one cares about her issues. Singing AREN'T I ALLOWED, Jenna wants to know how a girl her age is supposed to feel and react. Jenna’s mom replies with her own thoughts about the emotional struggles from the parent’s point of view. They both ask questions but neither listens to each other. Drained, Jenna sits down while the MC tries to boost her spirits. He sings ‘DEM OL' MEMORIES attempting to charm Jenna out of her sadness by magically revealing some good memories of her past.
Jenna watches different memories from her past with friends, family, and her first kiss. She’s almost happy - but then suddenly reveal her version of real memories as a young teen: being horribly embarrassed by her parents, friends being cruel, and hurtful teachers. All the negative energy leads Jenna to the world of her own nightmares. The Ice Queen (played by Jenna’s mom) appears and leads her servants through the devilish WHAT YOU HIDE. She explains how she always knows what Jenna is thinking, aware of her secret, deepest thoughts. This is truly Jenna’s worst nightmare as she’s horrified that the Ice Queen knows everything about her.Jenna is exhausted and defeated from this emotional journey. She finally bares her soul, trying to make sense of the adventure, what she may have learned, and her own struggles. With this revelation and vulnerability, the MC and Ice Queen bring Jenna back to reality. As she wakes up from her dream, Jenna’s mom and dad come up to her room to see if they can work out their issues. Jenna agrees to be more cooperative and be less “dramatic” if she wants to be treated differently. She asks to have time with her friends to “deal with some things. Her parents reluctantly agree and realize that Jenna is slowly maturing, but know it’s still a long journey . . . |
