| | When I was in the second grade for the second time, my teacher told me to stand in the waste paper basket because my handwriting was all crooked and I read so slowly. After my parents had me tested, it was discovered that I had dyslexia. While school has never been easy for me, I graduated from Sarah Lawrence College and earned two Master's Degrees in Special Education. Luckily, I had the good sense to fall in love with a man who could spell and read a map. I've used my professional experience as a teacher and personal experience as a mother (we have two creative sons with dyslexia) to write about smart kids who learn differently. As an educator and author, I lecture to school children and educators all over the country about the importance of humor, hope, resiliency and self-advocacy, especially when growing up with dyslexia and ADHD. My novels for children include: HOW MANY DAYS UNTIL TOMORROW? and ZIPPER: THE KID WITH ADHD. I also wrote JOSH: A BOY WITH DYSLEXIA and the young-adult novel, THE WORST SPELLER IN JR HIGH, on which my first play is based. I live in Damariscotta, Maine with my husband who continues to correct my spelling and to drive me places I'd never, ever find on my own. | |
