Author's Notes:
Having run two youth theatres, both here and in the North of England, it has been my pleasure for the past 20 years or so to merge my several passions in writing scripts for children, some of which have a deaf awareness theme, with theatre. The Deaf Community is, after all, a distinct and fascinating culture, and ever since my internship in Deaf Theatre at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York (way back in 1983-84) I have been delightedly exploring the link between that culture, its beautiful language, and theatre. Of all the plays I have written and subsequently produced in both countries, the most popular (with both hearing and deaf audiences) is probably also the most creative, “Mye and the Sandpeople,” an interactive children’s fairy tale with a strong female protagonist, a message and a twist. The script is written for an indeterminate number of characters, 7-12 being the most likely cast size. The most recent production, in 2002 by the Bridge Players Theatre Company in New Jersey, included costumed sign interpreters and a large cast which ranged in age from 9 to nearly 60. But this play works just as well with a cast of children. And it really gets the audience thinking about a range of topics from communication to dreams to deafness to music to magic eggs.

This is one of five fantasies that I wrote that fulfills the need for strong female characters and a deaf character. There is magic and fantastical creatures as the characters weave a spell of fantasy to capture the imaginations of children of all ages, well up into middle school. Audiences can expect not only to be entertained, but to participate in the play as well. This is a really magical experience.

Synopsis
Mye of Tantamee, a young storyteller in search of inspiration, wanders into the wacky land of Yarbankian and the fun begins. In no time, with the help of the Sandpeople, Mungo the Music Maker, and the audience, Mye is caught up in a quest to help the beautiful deaf Empress Imperia recover her happiness (which was stored in a magic egg and subsequently stolen by the mysterious Bork). From the opening scene to the dance marathon at the end, audience members of all ages are swept along by magic, music and mayhem. With the exception of two (female) characters, the cast is gender-flexible and could be produced with an all-female cast or any combination with a minimum of two women. This is a fantastical original fairy tale that reaches out to both deaf and hearing children with a tribute to Lewis Carroll.
