| | Script Preview | | | Synopsis | | Truth is stranger than fiction: In 1868, a shrewd New York cigar maker named George Hull devised a scheme to fool the public, and make a fortune. A large block of gypsum was quarried and sculpted into the likeness of a deceased gigantic human being and buried. One year later, the buried secret was discovered (by workers in the employ of Mr. Hull) the find was proclaimed “a fossilized giant.” The Cardiff Giant became a wildly successful traveling exhibit, eventually displayed on Broadway. The scam was so lucrative, the great showman P.T. Barnum made a replica of the giant in order to line his own pockets, and steal the fame away from George Hull. |
