Synopsis
Divorce. A difficult subject, but one so prevalent that schools and theaters often look for ways to help further the discussion and help children cope. Separate Lives takes a touching one-act look at the lives of the children of divorce. Without being maudlin, it uses a narrator to walk through the lives of eight different teens impacted by divorce. The whole gamut of emotions is explored, from anger to anxiety, denial to innocence, blame to acceptance. We smile as innocent younger sister Sarah has a birthday party with her dolls and eventually draws her sullen brother, Matthew, into her loving circle. We are moved when the stern coach talks angry Natalia into finding comfort in perseverance, in finding solace with her teammates. And we even laugh at the discussion of the language of divorce. In the end, Separate Lives will leave your audience with a better understanding of divorce - and a feeling of hopefulness in the resilience of children.
